PREFACE
When
an educated European lives through war and almost instant collapse of the
civilized society and its value systems, which occurred during last decade in the mist of the
highly developed Europe, he starts to notice things which before were
perceived as unimportant or downright impossible. Some tame later one chooses his side ignoring all
possible consequences.
INTRODUCTION
At
the beginning, decision to work on this article emerged from the need to point to
the wide public the existence and the nature of the anomalous activity that
is, starting with 05-26-2000, ongoing around the town of Rijeka in Croatia
(Europe).
During
the work it become apparent that the global nature of this phenomenon cannot
be ignored, therefore results of tracking and analysis of local events become a part
of attempt to disclose its targets.
As
its perception and understanding continually develops, this article shall be
updated accordingly.
Database
from which data were drawn consists of directly, in-field acquired facts and
those accessible to public from literature and Internet. When this did not
suffice, indications emerging from other complement researches and
suppositions based on personal understanding of current state and possible
directions of development of adequate science branches and similar disciplines
were used.
LOCATION LAYOUT
Industrial
and harbor town Rijeka is positioned in the North part of Kvarner bay.
Bay
itself, sometime called Rijeka bay also, is of circular shape, measuring
around twenty kilometers in diameter.
In
the hills some ten kilometers to the Northwest and mountains fifty kilometers
to the North of the
town, there is a border with neighboring Slovenia state.
A
number of small tourist Towns are placed on the Northeast shore in whose back
rises mountainous area called Mountain district.
Mountain
Ucka, part of the Istrian peninsula, biggest Croatian tourist region, makes
the West coast of the bay on which the renowned tourist center, Opatia town is
situated.
There
are three, because of the visual land and isle overlap, from Rijeka invisible
bay entrances. Southern one, between cape Istria and isle of Cres which closes
Southern part of the bay, Southern, between same island and the isle of Krk
and finally Southeastern one, between isle of Krk and Eastern coast of the
mainland.
TRAFFIC
To
the Northwest, Rijeka is connected with Italy and Slovenia and towards
Northeast with Croatian capital Zagreb, by road and railroad.
Coastal
road that goes in direction of Southeast towards Dalmatian region
reaches some
600 km distant Dubrovnik city and continues to the border with Monte Negro
state.
Second
coastal road that goes to the West, passes through Opatia to end in some 120
km distant city of Pula, at the peak of Istrian cape.
Rijeka
is homeport of the biggest state maritime company that, with its ships,
maintains passenger service between the coast and the majority of those
inhabited of around 1000 existing Adriatic isles. Although once was the mayor
Yugoslav harbor, today Rijeka has only sporadic ship traffic making Kvarner
bay majority of the time empty.
Local
airport is placed on isle of Krk and even in its best times was not the cause
of any kind of heavier air traffic. In last 8 years, owing to the last local
war and resulting bad economic situation, visible air traffic boils down to
lending of two charter planes with tourists monthly.
CLIMATE
During
the summer, bay climate is characterized by clear days, constant, mild winds
that steadily change their direction and brief afternoon showers. Temperature
range in that period is between 25 and 32 ºC.
Winter
is mild, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 21 ºC. Occasionally, but
more rarely in last years, from Northeast blows strong, cold, dry wind called
Bora, after which German automobile company Volkswagen named its passenger car model. After
maximum one day it turns to south wind carrying rain clouds. According to the
mean yearly rainfall level, Rijeka is second town in Balkan region.
All
this maintains air clear without any special measures, because
local, once very strong industry is in last eight years mainly inactive.
