INTRODUCTION

Vice-President Dick Cheney once wisely said:

"You've got to go where the oil is", 

summing up much of world history since 1900. 

Sure enough, oil fuels US imperial seizures in the Caspian Sea region and Venezuela (oil reserves), Yugoslavia (which the infighting between USA and Europe destroyed resulting with permanent US military base in Kosovo, astride the pipeline route from Russia and Caspian basin to Europe), Afghanistan and Ukraine (a handy pipeline routes), and Iraq (large oil reserves). 

Now, in March 2005, we all await more of the same to occur to Syria (because it is on the route of pipeline by which Israel intends to suck on the Iraqi oil reserves, and invasion of Iran), and Moldavia (oil), while US starts to focus it's insanity once again towards Iran (oil and gas). 

William Engdahl is author of the book "A Century of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order" (image of William Engdah is

 for link to a book store click on the Engdahl'simage), that was firstly released in 1993, and afterwards was difficult to get (a second hand paperback copy was sold for 100 $), despite that it was the most quoted book of last decade in it's field. His personal background includes engineering and law (Princeton), working in Texas oil industry, and international economics (University of Stockholm).

With this book he has managed to produce a realistic new evaluation of the history of the 20th century. His precise research work thoroughly illuminates the various threads of world politics and he comes to the conclusion that the struggle for raw materials, and above all for the crude oil, has greatly determined the course of our history. To do so he had to sort out the complex web that connects the controlling interests of international politics with the goals and objectives of global oil and financial interests, these having merged in the last century into the powerful and dominant hegemony of an Anglo-American consortium.

As my name for this soulless group, even on this perception level, is grays, I was not surprised much that Engdahl, whose views of this level segment I share, uses the same name.

What follows is an William Engdahl interview by Karmela Devcic from Croatian weekly Globus, that was published on 03-11-2005. This interview is a precise translation from Croatian original, in which Engdahl uses term America to name that what the rest of the DS4 refers to as the U.S., meaning the structure that controls America, a community of free and responsible beings, that was once known as The Republic.

BUSH PLANS A WWIV
William Engdahl has consecrated his life to totally particular part of geopolitical research - influence of oil on international relations and political map of the world. The author of one of the most quoted political - historical studies of the end of 20th century titled "A Century of War", in his flat near Frankfurt, Germany, immersed in papers, is finishing the study of "a war against terrorism". Engdahl sounds bit paradoxical while, serious and focused, studying last Bush inauguration speech, he tries to, almost epistemological concept of 'the war against tyranny", disassemble to it's main parts.
"For old Greeks tyranny was manifestation of the will of the ruler upon people subdued to him" he says thoughtfully while analyzing what "tyranny" and "terror" mean in political vocabulary of Washington. He is long time in Germany and at times it seems that some of English words he speaks have an unnatural, hard German accent.

MANIPULATION WITH PATRIOTISM
Devcic: A while ago you have said for Yourself that You are an American Patriot. How it is to be an American Patriot in Europe while in the White House, fifth year in a row, presides George Bush?

Engdahl: I must have said that few years ago….Now I would hardly repeat something like that aloud, because government in Washington have made word "patriot" a subject of the worst kind of manipulation. They use it to justify the intervention in Iraq and massive killings of innocent people. 
In my life I have spent long time and I gave lots of energy fighting to make rich America more human - not to be money lender in the world market, not to be the lever of the power only, but to serve to global development also…I don't know if the country I was born in will ever achieve that, will I ever be able to say again that I am American Patriot, will that word ever again get old, uncontaminated meaning. 
Part of me entirely belongs to Europe, but in tottaly objective way I can say that, on the other side of Atlantic, exists huge positive energy in people, search for new solutions that cannot be seen in other countries….

DANGEROUS AND POWERFUL
Devcic: Has that "quest for new solutions" brought Bush to second mandate? What are key moves Bush will draw during the following 4 years?

Engdahl: It is difficult to say what Bush will do. There, in Washington, now sit the hardest of the hardest. Military conservatives have selected only the best among themselves. Behind Condoleezze Rice stands Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Pearle….all those are the principal creators of the war in Iraq. 
Now a war for the permission for war has commenced, i.e. to prepare and justify an even greater war. 
WWIV as they call it. 
By the WWIV they consider a cold war, this is why the leader of The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), who once was head of CIA, talks about WWIV.
That powerful group has terrifying global targets, and longer the world stays silent, instead to shout out aloud, they get stronger. That is a gang of world's mobsters (click on George W Bush's image taken during his second inauguration on February 2005 to go to THE ODD FELLOW ARTICLE) .

Devcic: American media already publish (half) serious analysis about Jeb Bush as potential third Bush in the Oval Office. How realistic is that?

Engdahl: No, that is a construct. I think that for such analysis is to early. Apart from that, how could the world bear that?

ORANGE REVOLUTION
Devcic: While the world approved the change of the regime in Ukraine, you were among rare analysts who warned that Kucma's dictatorship in Kiev was changed by Bush's people who will colonize Ukraine.

Engdahl: Ukraine is only a part of wider American strategy that goes after "active regime change" in the countries of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia, whose scope is to take all gas and oil pipe lines under American control. It is all about imposing of the American control upon the oil reserves that are essential to economy of European countries. 
Ex national security advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski was directly involved in "revolution" in Ukraine. Topple of regimes from Belgrade, over Georgia, to Kiev was executed according the same principle. For example, Jushcenko has for years been receiving various kinds of help from NED. NED was founded by American Congress during the time of Reagan with a purpose to "privatize" some operations that before were performed only by CIA. It was necessary for Washington to make the use of "plausible deniability" possible so it could say it's hands are clean.
Pentagon has developed a new strategy of helping and preparation of the coup d'etat in those countries. On that project Washington works for over 20 years. Important part of this work is done by a private think-tank organization, very near to Pentagon, that performs military interrogations for government, a kind of national defense institute. They call it "swarming". Good example of "swarming would be those mass demonstrations in Belgrade that have, at last, taken down Milosevich, or people on the streets that brought to the change of government in Georgia in 2003. 
It was interesting listen to Henry Kissinger and Colin Powell as they were reproving the election results during November, when Janukovich "won"'.…they have created all that themselves.
Brzezinsky has built all of his career trying to diminish Russian influence in Euroasia. He was on it already when he was national security advisor during Carter administration.

Devcic: Why Ukraine?

Engdahl: Ukraine is one of the most important fields in that geopolitical and energy war between Washington and Moscow. Ukrainian oil pipelines carry 75% of the European oil imports from Russia and Middle Asia, and thru Ukraine passes 34% of European natural gas imports. In the nearest future European imports thru Ukraine will increase, and that of oil from countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan….Ukraine was there a key point that had to be placed under American control (to know more click on the above image).

Devcic: Ukrainians are very optimistic. From babushka resellers on streets to the college professors, all hope that this large country with 48 million inhabitants will, overnight, start to follow ascending trajectory.

Engdahl: Of course I can understand that Ukrainians, naively, hope for the better, but I am really afraid for the future of this country now that it is, without any control and aided by the new government, entered by those who dictate all conditions on the world market. Those people think that they were destroyed and looted by ex regimes, and do not understand that times that are coming are even worse than that. 
A new, very small elite will be created that will find it's way in new circumstances, for a limited time a middle class will be pumped up a bit, so illusion of better things to come could be created, but there will be no great changes that Ukrainians hope for.
I have many Ukrainian friends and they, a little exaltedly, believe in their future. But look who is new Ukrainian government. Prime Minister. Timoshenko is billionaire. If she is honest women that fought for democracy in that country, then where from she got all that money? The reason why the coup d'etat in Kiev, so carefully prepared from Washington, has succeeded is that desperate situation in Ukrainian economy. But the promise that they bring something "new and better" could be taken as serious only by the nation of hungry and tired people. They will only now live badly. 
It is known that Timoshenko gathered her fortune by very suspect deals related to the selling of Russian gas.

THE WAR WITH RUSSIA
Devcic: When there will be a "revolution" in Europe again? Where is a next revolution training ground?

Engdahl: I think that the next target is Byelorussia. 
Condoleezza Rice in her nomination speech in the front of the Senate, when she was nominated to the new duty, in Washington drew contours of future actions in the war against terrorism….After Byelorussia Americans will "change" Moldavia. 
Judging by everything, preparations have already started. I do not know what is happening in Moldavia but I am pretty certain that American National Foundation for Democracy is pretty active there also. Country is networked by various kinds of civil organizations, Soros's foundations, various groups in which people are educated, just as was the case with Ukraine and Georgia. 
When Russia becomes surrounded with all this new pro-NATO states, as now Ukraine is, and the Byelorussia, it is clear that Russians will became worried and resolute in relation to their security. There lies the potential for a new war in the future….It must not be forgotten that the Russia is also a nuclear power.

Devcic: In Your books You state that Bush's preventive warfare doctrine was planned so it would lead to the "balkanization" of Euroasia. What does that mean?

Engdahl: In geopolitics nothing happens over the night. That is the concept that was noted 100 years ago, first to write about it was father of Geopolitics, Mackinder….Force that controls Europe, particularly Germany, France and Middle Europe, shall control also that what Mackinder calls "Heartland, nexus", and those are Russia, Ukraine, Caspian basin, Caucasus, and so on all the way to China. Force that controls "Heartland" will also control, so called, "world island" that goes down to Near East, North Africa. 
He who controls the "world island" controls the whole World (click on the image of the World according the Mackinder above to learn more about him).

This, quite openly, Brzezinski drew in his book "The Grand Chess Board". America now, after the cold war, regardless of the price and without being choosy about the means, must prevent alliance between Russia, oil rich Near East countries and Europe.

NEW BUSH'S TARGET

Devcic: How do recent American tours in Europe look to you, first Condoleezza Rice, then Bush?

Engdahl: Rice is only a good team player and good executive. What ever that women thinks, and if she ultimately gets it how Americans are dirty in Iraq, she will stand by Bush. Rice made her European campaign very charming, but politically there were no changes. 
Something like this looked also Bush's journey thru Germany, Slovakia etc….It is to win Germany over, particularly it, and only afterwards France, because Germans and French must be prevented from turning towards Russians and signing with them energy contracts for procurement of oil and gas, and thus becoming less dependent from America and fields Washington controls. 
All that is going on in the world is related to oil and oil derivates, it changes governments and regimes, and that is the key of economy structure. 
I think that Syria is the next target of Washington. Here the conflicts will start.

Devcic: Not Iran.

Engdahl: Indirectly Iran, but it is very hard to subdue. Iraq was easy if we compare it with Iran. Syria will be a pace towards Iran, it will be much easier to take, and at the same time Bush will satisfy some pressures from Ariel Sharon to strike Hesbolah and Hammas in that region.

Devcic: What will become with Iran?

Engdahl: My sources in Washington say that the paramount of tension will happen in June of this year. Americans now give Europeans time to work on diplomacy methods, but they know that, if they do not get in, Europe has no power to achieve anything of importance in softening of Iran. 

BLAIR'S INTEREST
Devcic: Iranian President has visited Croatia. Was a wise, pragmatic move of Croatian government that it has called him, taken Washington pressures on Iran?

Engdahl: Why it would not be wise if it is wisely exploited? It is necessary to go after the industrial collaboration between Zagreb and Teheran, Hatami probably did not arrive to Zagreb to take part in empty diplomatic conversations….
There is probably no person in the world any more who believes that US came to Iraq to fight Bin Laden, terrorism, and to seek Saddam's weapons of mass destruction. Washington was there interested, and it is still interested only in oil. The same is with Iran. 

Kissinger has explained that long time ago in most transparent and concise way: 
"If you control oil, you control county, if you control food, you control people."

But, the most informed world geologists and oil experts, including French Energy Institute, Colorado School of Mining, Uppsala Geology University in Sweden and Petroconsultants in Geneva agree that the world nears to exhaustion of oil and gas resources, meaning that the digging will continue but that it will become necessary to dig deeper and with incomparably higher costs. 
Forecasts show that great changes are due in 2010, and maybe before. When we reach this point world's economy will face crisis and oil prices will jump to heavens. The power which in that moment happens to be in control of oil reserves and oil supply lines will have the power that nobody on this world ever had. It will decide who can have oil or gas, and at what price, and who will be left without them. Countries that do not take part in that control will be ruined.

Devcic: Why Blair stands so firmly behind Bush in the war in Iraq?

Engdahl: Shortly said, because of oil. It will not take long before the North Sea oil wells dry up, and that means a strategic catastrophe for the Great Britain. Because of that Blair risked even his political career as the only true Bush's ally.

IRAQI WILL BE AMERICAN SLAVES
Devcic: Will American military ever retreat from Iraq?

Enghdal: Short and clear: no. Right now Americans are building 14 large military bases all over Iraq. That you cannot read in newspapers, that is the reality on the ground. 
Iraqi government was composed in such a way that all power that is related to economy and power sources is in American hands. They control Ministry of Energy, and, literarily, all managerial posts in every important Iraqi ministry are overcrowded with people that are in reality American servants, and their mandate lasts 5 years. 
Paul Bremer, before he left Iraq, forced there hundred of lows that Alavi signed. By such means Americans have taken over the control of every aspect of the Iraqi economy life, where now privatization is going to start, and all is set up so the Iraqi become slaves….For example, that what Iraqi peasants grew for centuries now is starting to be imported in their country….


AMERICA IS THE GREATEST DEBTOR IN THE WORLD
Devcic: On the other hand for some years You are insisting on the warning that Americans are knocking on the door of great depression compared to which that one from '30 will look like child's game.

Engdahl: Bush has as the head of American central bank, known as the Fed, last year kept 78 year Alan Greenspan in his fifth mandate. Greenspan's only short-term goal was to keep the American economy apparently strong so the Bush could win the elections November last year. 
World is today based on cheep dollar and credits. When American interests jump up, and everything indicates that that is inevitable, dramatic shock will shake Europe, Asia and the whole global economy, it will be the worst shock after the great crisis of '30. Large credits on which the life of Americans was built, and which they can service today, over the night will become unserviceable. Common American four member family is indebted for $ 120.000. American housing prices have risen for 50% during the last 6 years, and all that because of Greenspan's favorable credits. When house of cards comes down the collapse will start.
